Yulia Tymoshenko's and Yuriy Lutsenko's case press statement

Chairman of the European Parliament Delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, Press statement.

According to Ukrainian media the Kyiv's Court of Appeals has upheld a verdict issued by Kyiv's Pechersky District Court against the former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko, who was sentenced to four years in prison for malfeasance. I took note of this fact with regret. This sentence once again showed that political decisions should be subjected to the political responsibility rather than criminal.

I urge the Ukrainian authorities to guarantee that the cassation procedure of Mr Lutsenko's case be as transparent as possible. I welcome Ukrainian Prime Minister Azarov's decision to accept the European Parliament's idea that an international personality should be sent to observe Yulia Tymoshenko's process, with full access to the judges, lawyers and documents. I call for an establishment of such body to follow also Mr Lutsenko's trial.
